Why Did Fire Emblem Engage Fall Off? (2024)

I really hate the notion that we shouldn’t be too critical of pieces of media that are predominantly designed for a younger audience. ATLA is a show made for literal children and the narrative, worldbuilding, careful handling of wonderfully written characters is the best I‘ve ever seen. No „adult“ show could even come close. This is why I always feel like it’s a very lazy excuse to give something some kind of credit because it was made for teenagers. Children are neither as dumb as this statement makes them out to be, nor does this mean that all pieces of media for younger audiences automatically couldn’t be taken seriously. This is why I will continue to judge books, shows and games at what they present to me and not what I think could be „enough“ depth for teenage audiences.
In the case of Engage, I understood very quickly in my research on the game before buying that it wouldn’t be for me. I‘m one of the many people who got introduced to FE because of 3H and to this day the characters have me in a chokehold. I‘ve read reviews and figured that Engage has a very different focus than 3H so I didn’t buy it and hunted down the 3DS games instead. I‘m currently playing Shadows of Valentia for the first time and having the best time with it! Can’t wait to get to Awakening and Fates. I also heard the next FE game could be set in Fodlan again and even as the biggest and most delulu 3H-fan I‘m still suspicious whether that would be a good idea or not… but of course I‘m very curious for the future of Fire Emblem

I agree. Engage takes the stereotypical approach to being for "younger audiences" and it's annoying. A story that's overly cheesy, characters with silly tropes all over the place, and an art style that looks like it came out of a generic anime.

I'm critical of stories for children and think children are dumb at the same time.
3H has a bad story that doesn't even compare to something like ATLA. It has a superior story to Engage but that doesn't make it good.
Engage is better because of its superior gameplay which is what's important in a game.
Are you joking with not seeing any shows for adults better written than ATLA? I like ATLA but something like The Sopranos is better and it's really not even close.

I love ATLA as much as the next guy but even among animated shows only it doesn't hold a candle to what the best anime have to offer. ATLA definitely is justified to be one of the 2000's most popular animated series. A cartoon that was directed at children and on top of that, better than many animes at that time. However, there are plenty of anime who are just as good, if not outright better than ATLA. Don't get me even started on ''adult shows''... You mean to tell me something like Breaking Bad is not as well written as ATLA? Come on.
As for Engage...Yes it has a bad story. What most critics love to ignore...(and people who started with Three Houses don't know)... most Fire Emblem Games have a bad story...or rather a pretty mediocre fantasy anime plot. Yes there were games like Geneology of the Holy War and Path of Radiance, where the writing team put some more effort in...but for all these games we got Gaiden/Echoes, Awakening, Fates, Sacred Stones, Blazing Blade, Binding Blade, Mystery of the Emblem...the first Warriors, Tokyo Mirage Sessions... And Fire Emblem Three Houses was outsourced to Koei Tecmo (the head company behind Dynasty/Samurai Warriors, Ninja Gaiden, Dead or Alive, Nioh, Toukiden etc.)...and these guys did what they love to do... writing a Romance of the Three Kingdoms fanfiction. So no wonder Three Houses received a Warriors spin off just a short time later...
Engage is an anniversary game, intended to celebrate the series history...so out of all Fire Emblem games, it will surely incorporate more from other titles than just Three Houses. And the game was pretty open about being silly and tropey from the get go. So people who say that Engage is some kind of bane that endangers Fire Emblems existence is completely preposterous. By that logic, Warriors 1 and Tokyo Mirage Sessions would be a catastrophy for the series as well. And despite their story being just as, if not more, awful than Engage, fans completely overlooked it and went on with their lifes. And Engage is supposed to be the big dealbreaker now? Lol
As for the future of the series....considering how successful Three Houses was, they will go further in this direction and improve on the faults of Three Houses...or they will do another Echoes game (rumors say they are going to remake Geneology of the Holy War/FE4)

@@saxoncook That's a flawed notion. League of Legends for example has boring gameplay, but the characters and lore of the world far surpass Engage's cast and setting. The gameplay is great but it isn't the end all be all of a game.
